To learn more about the 2010 Standards relating to ATM machines, click on each icon in the image to the right. This is intended to be a brief overview and represents the major standards requiring a possible upgrade to the ATM machine.
Numeric Keypads and Input Devices
Numeric keys shall be arranged in a 12-key ascending or descending layout The number five key shall be tactilely distinct from the other keys. Further tactile distinctions are as follows:
- Enter or Proceed: raised Circle
- Clear or Correct: raised Left Arrow
- Cancel: raised "X"
- Add Value: raised Plus Sign
- Decrease Value: raised Minus Sign
Floor Space
The clear floor or ground space for customer access to ATM machine must be 30" x 48". The space should be positioned to allow for either forward or parallel approach to the ATM machine.
Height/Reach
With either an obstructed or unobstructed approach to the ATM machine, the highest functioning element must be no higher than 48" above the ground. For most ATM machines, this constitutes the top-most function key aside the display. The lowest functioning element must be no lower than 15" above the ground. For most ATM machines, this constitutes the cash tray.
Display and Function Key Visibility
The display screen shall be visible from a point 40" above the center of the clear floor space in front of the ATM machine. Characters displayed on the screen shall be in a sans serif font and display at least 3/16" high. Display and function key characters shall contrast with their background with either light characters on dark background or dark characters on light background.
Voice Guided Transactions
Machines shall be speech enabled. Operating instructions and orientation, visible transaction prompts, user input verification, error messages, and all displayed information for full use shall be accessible to and independently usable by individuals with vision impairments. Speech shall be delivered through a mechanism that is readily available to all users such as an industry standard connector. For most ATM machines, this constitutes a headphone jack which initiates speech when headphones are inserted. Speech shall be recorded or digitized human, or synthesized.
If the ATM machine provides additional services such as selling theater tickets, dispensing coupons, or providing monthly statements, all such functions must be available to customers using speech output.
